"Art and Adventure on Jefferson Avenue" Open Doors Plein Air Paint In is a non-juried event for all levels sponsored by The Jefferson Avenue Center, The Thurber House and Columbus Landmarks Foundation. The event includes plein air painting, community activities, and concludes with a community reception at the Historic Thurber Center. This event offers a unique opportunity for artists and community to immerse themselves in art, history, and the vibrant community spirit of the Discovery District in Columbus. The Art Concern presents Music in the Garden - a collection of artwork aimed at capturing aspects of movement, sound and the beauty of the natural world around us. Artist Brittany Cosgrove is a Columbus-based artist, muralist, teacher and musician with a passion for creating and exploring 2D and 3D media, such as drawing, painting, ceramics and sewing.

"I am often listening to music while painting, allowing the music to influence the colors, lines and textures I create. I enjoy painting with vibrantly colored acrylics. Multiple thin layers of paint applied with brush, palette knife, and pen create the depth and textures within my work," says Congrove. "The realistic aspect in my art shows the beauty of the subject in full detail, while the abstract elements represent sound and movement."

Runs from July 5 to August 10 in the Main Gallery. The Opening Reception is on July 12 from 6-8pm. Location: 139 W Main St, Columbus, OH 43215.

My work explores archetypal themes found in stories across cultures and historical periods. Objects laden with symbolic power are presented in a bold photorealistic style while referencing the traditional still life genre. Anything may be used to advance the narrative of a painting, such as a toy, a flower, an antique bronze sculpture, a book end, blown glass vase or tribal mask.

Together, the paintings are evocative. They tell of a universal human experience by expressing ideas, emotions, themes and narratives that recur across time and cultures. These archetypes persist because they reflect fundamental aspects of human psychology and our relationship with the world. The work makes the case that, beneath the surface, our stories are interconnected.

Journeys Exhibition at the McConnell Center

I have a solo exhibition opening July 11 and running through September 3, 2024 at the Peggy R. McConnell Center. It is located at 777 Evening Street in Worthington, Ohio. The colorful sculpture and painting in the show is about the signs and symbols left behind by the earliest humans in caves and carved on rocks as they migrated out of Africa and around the earth. Very early languages is a related topic I also explored. I also made a group of geometric paintings that came out of my own moves and travels. The opening reception will be July 11 from 6-8 pm, and there will be an artist talk on August 8 from 7-8 pm. I would like to invite you to come see the show, it's my biggest yet, filling 3 corridors and the gallery! I'm happy to meet you there anytime during open hours. There is ample free parking and lots of restaurants in the area up on High Street.

My creative process is heavily influenced by my love of typography, books, myth/stories, a wide variety of retro/ancient artifacts (Vintage paper publications, Neolithic cave paintings, Egyptian hieroglyphics) and, perhaps without realizing it consciously, my years of graphic design experience. This reveals itself most in the innate use of the cruciform composition.

I love to work in a heavily-textured mixed-media approach in my paintings. The tactile feeling of paper, paint and other elements helps me to better connect with the creative process.

My goal as an artist is to create new life from old forms. By mining a wealth of “decaying” material (discarded photos, old newsprint, books stripped of their covers, etc.) I seek to repurpose it. Through my work, I aim to connect the past and the present and hope that it may inspire the future.

The exhibition Mindful Cycles of Hope features the work of Matt Swift, incorporating three distinct types of art: abstract expressionist action painting with the help of a robot vacuum, meditational photography with digital manipulation, and video installation and mixed media experimentation. Each piece is accompanied by detailed information to enhance and deepen the viewer's understanding and appreciation of the artwork. For more work by Matt Swift.

As part of Mindful Cycles of Hope, at 2:30pm the artist Matt Swift will lead a short meditation on drinking. Meditation and mindfulness are a foundation of the works in this show and the artist’s creative practice. The artist will invite those at the reception to take a few moments to turn their attention to the drink they have in their hands, take a few deep breaths and focus on the marvel of the liquid that fills their cup and how that liquid is connected to a larger existence we often take for granted.

Pies and Pints in the Short North is hosting contemporary artist and photographer Sheryl Lazenby for the month of May. Visitors can see her "Ohio—Seen & Unseen" exhibit which showcases both traditional and infrared photographs. Sheryl shoots with a standard DSLR and a camera that has been permanently converted to shoot 720nm infrared which captures a spectrum of light we are unable to see with our eyes.

JT Thompson and Ohio Art League present: A Place in Time with XYZ

Abstract oil painter JT Thompson is known for his fragmented, labyrinth landscapes. He works in a style he calls Geometric Surrealism, in which physical spaces are abstracted to create a highly distorted vision of reality.

His subtle, shifting, spaces operate on a kind of dream-logic. Forms rise and recede simultaneously, as perspective seems to oscillate. This framework challenges the certainty of the observer’s point of view, as spaces that should feel familiar become ambiguous and conflicting.

Born and raised in the Dayton area, Thompson settled in Columbus after receiving a scholarship to study painting at the Columbus College of Art and Design. He has received Individual Artist Grants from the Greater Columbus Arts Council, and was selected for the Ohio Arts Council’s 2017 Biennial Juried Exhibition. His work is represented in the collections of the Columbus Museum of Art, the Greater Columbus Convention Center, and Northern Kentucky University.

About the Jurors

Dennison Griffith served as President of Columbus College of Art & Design from 1998 to 2014, and before that he was Deputy Director of The Columbus Museum of Art. Alongside his administrative career, Griffith is an artist whose work has been exhibited extensively, both domestically and abroad.

Natalie Marsh is Director of the Graham Gund Gallery at Kenyon College. She previously served as Director of the Denison Museum at Denison University and as Director of the exhibitions program at Columbus College of Art & Design.

Rose Bouthillier is Associate Curator and Publications Manager at the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland. Her writing has been published in C Magazine, frieze, esse, and Art Criticism & Other Short Stories.

About Fresh A.I.R. Gallery

Celebrating the past 10 years and launching the next decade, the Fresh A.I.R. Gallery will host an anniversary exhibition from April 29–July 17, 2015.

Since opening their gallery doors in September 2004, Fresh A.I.R. Gallery has shown 60 exhibitions, displaying the artwork of over 200 artists and sold more than 250 pieces of artwork totaling over $60,000. Fresh A.I.R. Fairly Inspired: Local-Global Connections Art Show

"What aparks in your imagination and what moves you when you look at the handmade craft work of an artisan who lives in a different part of the world?"

This is the question Global Gifts, a Short North fair trade store, posed to Columbus-area artists. Their visual responses are the focus of Fairly Inspired: Local-Global Connections Art Show on display at Global Gifts during the month of May.

In a spirit of reciprocity and in honor of World Fair Trade Day, Global Gifts invited local artists to choose from fair trade artisan handcrafts in the store and to let their inspiration lead them to create original works of art. Fair Trade promotes handmade, artisan products while respecting the cultural identity of artisans from developing countries. The intention of this art show is to highlight the links between artisans and artists from both near and far away with a commitment to supporting and celebrating their talents and skills.

Participating local artists include OAL member, Donna Estep, as well as:

Melissa Ayotte, Tiffany Christopher, Ashley YaYa Daubenmire, Danielle Forbes, Judy Gerdeman, Alissa Head, Elissa Leach, Lisa McLymont, Danielle Poling, Marritt Vaessin, Wendy Yeager, and Lisa Metzker.

Pick Up for Spring Juried will be at Mount Vernon Nazarene University, Schnormeier Gallery on Saturday from 9-4pm, and on Sunday from 1-3pm. This is for all artists who have not made alternative plans with OAL to transport work back from Mount Vernon to Yarn It & Haberdashery.

Any artwork that is not picked up from Schnormeier Gallery by 3pm on Sunday can be picked up on Monday or Tuesday at Yarn It & Haberdashery from 12-5pm. It is located at 1093 W 1st. Ave, Grandview Heights, OH 43212.

Livingston Park Public Art Project- Streetcar District Art Series

Ghost Ranch Workshop/Retreat 2015

Space is limited to 14 participants for Darla Bostick's 8th Annual Ghost Ranch Workshop/Retreat 2015 in Abiquiu, New Mexico. From October 4 - 10, artists are invited to bring materials they already love working with, or maybe some for a technique in unchartered territory.

The Workshop includes digital photography, watercolors/acrylics, pencil, text incorporation, mixed media work with an opportunity for plain air painting and a floor-to-ceiling vista view activity room. Lodging and meals are included in the 7 day/6 night fee of $495/ participant.

I Spy Stephanie Rond on the Google Street Art Project!

In June 2014, Google Art Project began publishing street art images, archiving works by artists like INTI in France, El Seed in Tunisia, and Nerf in Argentina. This month, the number of street art pieces carefully cataloged on Google Art Project reached 10,000! The Google Street Art Project aims to immortalize and preserve an art form that has been anything but "forever."

For example, your favorite mural may be painted over in real life, but in the digital realm, it lives on forever.

Find work by local street artist and Ohio Art League member Stephanie Rond by following this link and searching under "S."

Artists receive full credit on the site, which doesn't allow downloads and dates each piece according to when it actually appeared at its designated location. Navigating the site, one can experience audio tours, curated online exhibitions, and original artist stories.

Water Street Studios: Contemporary Portraits

Forty miles west of Chicago, Water Street Studios is a Nonprofit Arts Center, home to two galleries, 26 artist studios, three classrooms, access programs for ceramics, printmaking and welding, a visiting artist residency, and a thriving community of artists.

Anne Harris, painter, professor at SAIC, and board vice president at Riverside Arts Center, will be jurying the group show, Contemporary Portraits.

We at OAL know the exponential portrait-creating capabilities of some of our members, so make sure to submit your works! Although most portraits are thought of as paintings, portrait works in all media will be considered! No excuses! One work will be awarded, and the artist will receive $500!

Contemporary Portraits will run May 16 through June 27, 2015. The Opening Reception takes place Saturday, May 16, the first night of the exhibition.

DEADLINE: April 12, 2015 (online only)

Notice of acceptance will be given by April 22nd, and work is to be dropped off May 3rd. Works selected for the exhibition are to be picked up June 28th.

MoMA Holiday Card Program 2016: Call for Designs!

The Museum of Modern Art’s holiday card program began in 1954 with the introduction of holiday cards created by contemporary artists and designers whose work was represented in the Museum’s exhibitions or permanent collection.

Each year, MoMA selects artwork submitted by designers and artists whose designs reflect The Museum of Modern Art, modernism, and innovation in card design. Historically, MoMA has produced holiday cards celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, New Year’s, and the general holiday season.

All proceeds from the sale of MoMA products are used to support The Museum of Modern Art and its programs.

The Joseph Hotel

Our Board of Trustees member, Andrew Ina, as a part of WOSU filmed this great piece on the new Joseph Hotel at Broad and High where strong OAL supporters, Rebecca Ibel and Sarah Fairchild, had a hand in ensuring Ohio artists were represented thanks to the PIzzuti’s.

If you are not familiar with the new Joseph Hotel, it is a boutique, art hotel that is named after Ron Pizzuti's father. Ron is a real estate developer and an accomplished art collector, who was asked a few years ago to jury an OAL exhibition. In many ways over the years, he has shown his commitment to not only Ohio artists but the city of Columbus and this is just another example.

No more worrying about which book to read this winter, it's time to make your own! Spring is upon us, so clean out the cobwebs and get your creative juices flowing. Check out some of the upcoming workshops offered by Columbus's own Phoenix Rising:

Found Object Monoprint Workshop

Instructed by Marilyn McPheron, this class begins with a demo, and then participants may creatively experiment as far as their imaginations may take them before printing their own works. Using stencils, lace, cardboard cutouts, paper doilies, flattened metal odds-and-ends, string, vegetable netting and an array of interesting flat, house-hold items, class-goes will create a series of similar but unique prints using Speedball water-soluble printing ink. Most participants will complete around 6 to 9 prints (two or three series of three prints each). The end result is essentially a mystery, as you will not know exactly what will appear until the paper is pulled from the plate after it is pressed. This workshop is limited to 6 participants, so grab a seat ASAP!

Signature Bookbinding

Also instructed by Marilyn McPheron, Signature Bookbinding serves to teach participants how to sew two "signature" based books and how to attach the covers. The first book will be an open spine sketch book with a total of 48 usable pages. Each signature, a total of 4, within the "text block" will be a different type of drawing paper. This first book, which the finished size is to be about 9 x 12 inches, will be book board covered in paper and decorative tapes. The second book, more like a journal, will have a rounded, soft spine covered with book cloth. Although it will be smaller in size, the second book will contain the same amount of signatures/pages. Document your very own expressions within a sketch book or journal you created yourself! This course is also limited to 6 participants, so act fast!

Marjorie Bender and Barbara Vogel: Family and Friends offers a moving and amusing look at the pivotal relationships of our lives: those with our families and friends. Bender and Vogel have both exhibited extensively in the Columbus area. Bender is best known for her clay sculptures, but also produces and exhibits drawings and paintings. Vogel’s background is in photography. Many of her works continue to connect to photographic images, often in unexpected ways. The artists excel in conveying the many dimensions of our closest relationships and in utilizing humor — sometimes whimsical, sometimes dark — to undercut sentimentality. Family and Friends brings together earlier and more recent works by both artists and will feature a new collaborative project that pays homage to a number of their mutual friends and mentors.

A free public reception will be held Tuesday, April 7 from 6 to 8 p.m.

OAL member, Chad Cochran, and Brian Reaume have collaborated on the show along with Eric Rausch--the curator.

Statement from Chad:

I first saw Brian's work at the CAC, during his solo exhibition, Shelter Series: Coastal Refugees. I was immediately drawn to his vision and concepts tied to providing voices to shelters because my thoughts align. As I capture the decaying and vanishing structures throughout Ohio, I hope to not only provide documentation but also to initiate conversations about the homes and those who inhabited them. There are stories that were told within the walls and they remain captured there. With my photos and assemblage pieces, I hope to provide the viewer a way to connect to those stories which gives them a chance to find a new home.

In my photographs, Brian has found characters. Ones he will converse with, study, understand and express. We work to provide new meaning, hope and voices to these "vaporizing" structures.

Statement from Brian:

Through the use of mixed media we give voices to forgotten, lost Ohio shelters of past. Each work will begin from a current photograph, from this image the works are reinterpreted through painting, sculpture or assemblage.

The purpose of having a two person show as opposed to a solo exhibit is to express the idea of our multi-layered vision. The challenge is to create from another's work and tell a story from a different perspective, using my intention and delving into Chad's vision of history in Ohio. By changing the everyday reality of passing these relics without notice; instead putting purpose to stopping, looking and listening to these forgotten shelters, we can map rural and urban decay for future generations. The personal challenge for me is spending time with each photo and listen to them intently to retrieve their story as opposed to painting/sculpting from the feel of actually being at the location. I have found this to bring an intimacy with each work that is not forced, instead being a seamless transition from print to painting or 2d to 3d once I learn to listen to the subject.

Statement from Eric:

I have come to know Brian and Chad as artists; these two are overcome with a need to document their world. Through their experimentation and documentation they create beautiful works of art that are engaging to a viewer and professionally finished. When I heard that they were working together to collaborate on a show, I was instantly interested to hear more. Through our ensuing conversations we formed a partnership that included me as their curator.

There is a link between their artwork in visual appeal, and together they have created an exhibition experience for the viewer. The show includes 2d and 3d works in various sizes and price points. Each piece is finished to a high standard of professionalism, from framed photographs, wall hanging and pedestal sculptures to a large installation piece in the gallery.

The installation will include large "vapor shelters" which will have the look of porcelain with minimal color and texture. Varying in size, these shelters will be installed in the center of the main gallery so the viewer can walk around each one and may be able to see inside but will not be able to enter. The area around the grouping of shelters will have elements of scattered debris including chairs for the viewer to sit and contemplate. The structures will have the feeling that they are visions of what once stood in what is now debris. Elements of light and sound will be used to illustrate the life that these shelters housed and the stories that are contained within.

Meridian International Center - a non-profit based in Washington, D.C. - is now accepting applications for the 2015-2016 Community Engagement through the Arts Exchange Program for American mural artists. Funded by the U.S. Department of State's Cultural Programs Division in the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs with programming support from Meridian, four American artists will travel abroad to collaborate with local youth and underserved populations on community-based projects in the mural arts. Artists will design, implement and administer a 3.5-week, in-country program based on local community issues for the country specified. Projects should be designed to advance U.S. foreign policy goals in that country by addressing a local community issue, as youth or women's empowerment, gender-based violence, social inclusion, regional stability, and the environment.

Meridian is currently accepting applications for projects in Brazil, Cuba, India, and Turkey. Applications are due by 11:59pm EST on March 31, 2015.

Worthington Art Festival: Emerging Artists

The Peggy R. McConnell Arts Center is hosting an Emerging Artist section on the front lawn of the facility during the Worthington Art Festival from June 20- 21, 2015. This program is implemented to promote Ohio artists -either students or those within the first three years of their career- who have little or no selling or exhibiting experience in festivals.

All applicants must submit a complete application packet, which includes three (3) images of the artist's work and one (1) image of his/ her exhibit, a brief biography of the artist and a description of his/her artwork. Artwork must be the original creation of the entering artist and exemplify characteristics of fine arts or fine crafts. While tents are encouraged, they are not required.

Applications are due by April 15, 2015.

Xante & Paper Litho Workshop

April 18, 2015 / 10 am - 3 pm

This class will use a polymer Xante matrix to create immediate graphic images using Sharpie + other permanent markers to create the drawing. This process is similar to a paper litho but with more longevity. The plate[12×15] + a Sharpie marker included. Bring drawings and images with you to class. Paper litho aka Xerox Litho will also be demonstrated. This class includes a free Open Studio pass.

Curators are, perhaps, the most vulnerable individuals during a controversy. Their jobs are often at stake as they are under pressure from artists who are rarely willing to negotiate the presentation of their work and from museum administrators concerned about donors, trustees, legal liabilities and public relations. This one-day seminar offers curators the opportunity to discuss, among colleagues and with experts, the challenges of organizing and presenting exhibitions containing controversial work. The seminar sessions will be followed by an evening panel discussion that will be open to the public.

Given that it is curators who frame the context of an exhibition, during a controversy they are usually the ones to also negotiate with the hosting institution and the general public, handle the fallout of controversies, while also making decisions about keeping or removing specific works. The goal of this seminar series is to inform and equip curators with strategic and legal means with which to safeguard their curatorial vision and to negotiate effectively with diverse and interested parties.

The seminar consists of four sessions, led by Johanna Burton, director and curator of education and public programs at the New Museum, Laura Raicovich, Director of the Queens Museum of Art, Sergio Muñoz Sarmiento, artist and art lawyer, and Robert Storr, artists and curator, Dean of the Yale School of Art.

Application process: the workshop is open to early and mid-career curators-both independent and those working within institutions. The Seminar Series is limited to 15 participants.

The theme for this Drink & Draw event is "Atlantis and Deep Sea," so whether you feel like a God or that your day is pretty much swimming with the fishes, this theme leaves plenty of room for interpretation.

Kettering's Rosewood Gallery presents the 21st Annual exhibition of The View, a showcase for Ohio artists to present abstract or traditional views of landscape, environmental themes and imagery, and world issues.

Entries must be original works in any media (two- or three-dimensional), completed within the last four years and may not exceed 60" in width.
Work previously exhibited at Rosewood Gallery is not eligible for entry.
Jurying will be done based on digital images.

This year's juror, Kristin Spangenberg, serves as Curator of Prints at the Cincinnati Art Museum. She has more than 40 years of experience in her field, having previously served as Assistant Curator of Prints at the Cincinnati Art Museum and Assistant Curator of Graphic Arts at the Detroit Institute of Arts.

Luminous Landscapes showcases the work by two artists working in dynamically different mediums.

Carol Snyder wheel throws and hand carves her work using high fired unglazed porcelain allowing light itself to coney patterns and textures in each piece. She is influenced by nature and landscapes, horizon lines and tree tops - all of which create a rhythm in her work.

Kellie McDermott has also been fascinated with landscapes, particularly those abandoned urban scenes that have changed to become perennial records of decline. Her paintings capture the juxtaposition of light and contrast, and when layered with wax, take on an interesting luminous quality. Together these two artists capture the delicate balance between light and dark, made by hand vs nature, standing strength built by fragility.

I-Park 2015 Environmental Art Program

Call for Artists

I-Park, East Haddam, CT (U.S.), is pleased to announce its 2015 Environmental Art Biennale Program, fifth in the series. It will consist of a 3-week on-site residency during which a variety of site-responsive, ephemeral works will be created and installed within the I-Park landscape. The program will culminate in a public exhibition on September 20, 2015. Artists working in all the creative disciplines supported by I-Park’s Artists-in-Residence Program, plus performance art, are welcome and encouraged to apply: visual arts including environmental sculpture and moving image, architecture, sound art/installation, inter- and multi-disciplinary practice, language arts and landscape/garden/ecological design. Between 12 and 15 artists will be selected for this curated residency and exhibition.

A stipend of between $2,200 and $3,000 will be awarded to each artist or collaborating team, depending on their particular travel circumstances.

Application Deadline: March 9, 2015. Application fee: $30 (U.S.).

Six in Studio: Call for Artists!

Cleveland West Art League is excited to announce our Six in Studio call for artists! We are delighted that this year’s exhibition will be curated by artist Arabella Proffer. The "opening" will be Friday, March 20th and the closing will be on Friday, April 17th during West 78th Street Studios' monthly Third Friday. The six selected artists will spend the month between those dates working on their installations, and the completed work will be shown at the closing reception. 2-D, 3-D, and installation work is welcome, as are collaborations between the selected artists.

Ashland University’s Coburn Gallery seeks socially and politically engaging prints for the exhibition Power of the Press. Cash awards of over $500 for Best in Show and Juror’s Honorable Mention will be awarded. The theme of the exhibition Power of the Press focuses on emotionally passionate prints displaying content relating to social or political issues. Selected prints will build on the university’s historical collection of satirical and expressionist works by artists Honoré Daumier, Francisco Goya, and Käthe Kollwitz. Liz Maugans, one of Zygote Press’ co-founders and managing directors, will serve as the juror for the exhibition. She is a native of Ohio who received her Masters of Fine Arts in Printmaking from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Maugans teaches drawing and printmaking at the Cleveland Institute of Art, and has taught at various other institutions in the Cleveland area. She has exhibited nationally and her work is held in several collections. Entries must be original works created through traditional or experimental printmaking.

We encourage submission of works that address social and political issues that are currently impacting our society. Artists working in the United States, age 18 and older are eligible to submit up to 2 artworks with a $20 entry fee. All works must have been created within the last 4 years. Artists are responsible for shipping costs to and from the gallery. The deadline is June 30, 2015.

Lets congratulate OAL member artist, Kimberly Colleen Rhyan on her solo exhibition “Widening the Solstice of the Soul” at Columbus State Community Library!

Kimberly speaks about her work:

“My paintings embody many stories; each painting reverberates emotion through the exploration of relationships; my canvases continually contextualize and unveil the narrative, as it is perceived through the discovery of play. The act of painting is a metaphor for the complexities that have weaved in an out of my life, and yet, there is immense beauty somewhere between the intention and the outcome.

All throughout my life, creating art has helped me process life and progress as a human being. Ever since I was a young child, I have felt compelled to make art. My biological mother was an artist and I would sit in awe and watch her stucco everything (literally, our entire house). She was always making something out of nothing; she filled my world with her creativity, but she also caused my world to crumble when I was placed in foster care at 14.

Last year, my biological mother was diagnosed with brain cancer; we finally reconciled. As her final months and days passed, I realized that no matter the chaos, my mother was responsible for the cosmos of my artistry which inspires me to embrace life to the fullest. No matter the wounds of the past, I will always share my mother’s creative DNA. These paintings are the culmination of a year and a week of healing – to dig deep and accept that life is messy, but it is also filled with beautiful awakenings.

The creative path is explored by pressing found objects onto the canvas, either straws, credit cards, paint chips, cardboard, shaving cream lids, Legos, or marker caps; they are tools for building layers and revealing vulnerability; painting with acrylic is a process that allows emergent layers to convert into an arrangement of understanding; this all happens to be the ultimate manifestation of transformation.

During the process, I am exposing my own layers of identity as an expression of becoming more whole; this route to progress unveils inspiration to confidently capture the fullness of being known; these paintings are clothed with my determination to express life itself. Painting is a conduit to knowing and seeing; to approach the canvas is to reinvent time and overcome struggles of pugnacious resistance to widen the solstice of the soul and experience healing.”

New School aims to connect student artists from a wide array of schools in order to better prepare them for the road of professionalism that may lie ahead. Jurors Mark Zuzik, Ken Aschliman and Erin McKenna will select the exhibiting artists, and entries are open to any artist currently enrolled in an undergraduate program.

Call for artworks that act as independent agents and explore the cross-section of analog and digital media. The art in this exhibition need not be kinetic or sculptural; it is open to any combination of traditional and new media. This exhibition explores artistic objects - or their 2D and 3D representations - that appear to be responsive to our existence, or at least demand empathy, if not an emotion.

Eligibility: Open to all media. Each entry must have been completed within the past 2 years.

Juror: George Fifield, media arts curator, writer, teacher and artist. He is the founder and director of Boston Cyberarts Inc., a nonprofit arts organization that produced the Boston Cyberarts Festival.

Lea Gray Exhibition at Central Park Apartments!

The Central Park Apartments have beautiful, luxury apartments located at 105 Radio City Blvd., Columbus, OH 43235.

Until May 1st, they will be showing works by OAL member, Lea Gray.

The lobby is open Monday-Friday 10am-6pm, Saturday 10am-5pm, and Sunday 12:15pm-5pm.

Lea Gray specializes in painting, innovating Origami designs, and accessory design. She describes her art:

"Painting gives me the ability to express a vitality and rhythm that I find in the elements in nature. The repetitious patterns, growth structures and color formations enthrall me in a way that carries my artwork beyond representation. Focusing in landscape painting at the Columbus College of Art and Design I found a deeper attraction and fascination to nature's visual rhythm. Whether it is the branch development of a tree, the blossoming of a flower or even the formation of a color field in a crystal, every nuance of nature excites me. I use this passion to create works that I hope to not only fulfill the viewer but captivate them as well."

This 27-year-old Dayton-area art festival returns at Kettering's Lincoln Park Civic Commons on Sunday, August 9, 2015 from 11 AM to 5 PM. McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital in Oxford, Ohio is proud to announce its Fifth Annual Juried Exhibition for the Healing Art Project. This call for entry allows for an opportunity for artists to exhibit and sell two-dimensional work for up to one year!

The 2015 Healing Art Project is a regional show open to artists within a 100 mile radius of Oxford, OH, or to those artists who have a personal connection with the hospital. Artists are encouraged to explore the concept of art as a therapeutic element or healing instrument. Work will be judged on originality, theme, design, concept, technique, and appropriateness to the space and facility.

The City of Philadelphia’s Percent for Art Program through the Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy, in collaboration with Philadelphia Parks and Recreation, and Inter Park, LLC announce a competition to commission site-specific artwork(s) in JFK Plaza/LOVE Park!

This once-in-a-lifetime commission is part of the $14 million renovation and reconstruction of JFK Plaza/LOVE Park, and the competition is open to artists and teams who reside in the United States. Artwork will be selected on the basis of creativity, artistic merit, technical proficiency, and relationship to the site. Long-term maintenance, durability, and public safety concerns will be major selection criteria.

. Artists are required to comply with applicable rules, contracts, and procedures of all governmental boards and agencies of the City of Philadelphia. Submitted proposals will be reviewed on their relationship to both the overall design of the park as well as Robert Indiana’s iconic LOVE sculpture. Philly is asking that artists attempt to complement or add to the park rather than compete with the current surroundings.

Celebrate the day of love with Second Sight Studio's "Hearts United" Project!

Second Sight Studio wants to bring together the community of Franklinton and Columbus this Valentine's Day through heart art!

Interested participants are invited to create heart-shaped or heart-themed hearts on cardboard, cloth, plastic, and any other element-withstanding materials, and bring it to the lot at Bellows End (across from Second Sight Studios in Franklinton) to be hung and displayed along the chain-link fences of the schoolyard. Viewers can stroll the fences of hearts and enjoy the art, and refreshments will be served in the gallery.

The Hearts United for One Billion Rising is an open-participation temporary public "exhibition" and will be on display Feb. 14 through 15. Hanging will take place Feb. 14th from 11 am to 2 pm. Take-down begins at 3 PM on Sunday, Feb. 15.

Ohio Art League member-artist extraordinaire Barbara Vogel, along with Marjorie Bender, will host Family and Friends, a moving and amusing look at the pivotal relationships of our lives and the people within them.

Family and Friends will be on display at the Dublin Arts Council from April 7 through May 16, 2015, with a public Opening Reception April 7 from 6- 8 PM.

Bender is best known for her clay sculptures, but also produces and exhibits drawings and paintings. Vogel’s background is in photography. Many of her works continue to connect to photographic images, often in unexpected ways. Vogel also was awarded for her accomplishments among the community at the Ohio Made festival the previous summer.

The artists excel in conveying the many dimensions of our closest relationships and in utilizing humor — sometimes whimsical, sometimes dark — to undercut sentimentality. Family and Friends brings together earlier and more recent works by both artists and will feature a new collaborative project that pays homage to a number of their mutual friends and mentors.

Yeiser Art Center is now accepting entries for the FANTASTIC FIBERS 2015 international juried exhibition. One of Yeiser Art Center's most engaging, innovative & colorful international exhibits, Fantastic Fibers is an inspirational "must see" for quilters and textile art enthusiasts across the globe.

The show began in 1987 as a wearable art show but has evolved over the years to include a compelling mix of traditional and non-traditional works created from natural or synthetic fibers.

Traditionally, Yeiser Art Center receives nearly 800 entries from 128 artists from 12 countries. All selected work will be on display at the Yeiser Art Center April 1-June 6, 2015. The Fantastic Fibers exhibit is an American Quilter's Society (AQS) sanctioned event. This year's AQS QuiltWeek dates are April 22-25, 2015.

Jurors

The 2015 Fantastic Fibers jurors are Marcia Young, Publisher & Editor-in-Chief of Fiber Art Now magazine, and Laverne Zabielski, renowned Kentucky fiber artist, creator of Truly Wearable art and noted author.

Specifications

Contemporary and innovative works created with fiber as the primary medium are welcome. This exhibition is open to all artists 18 years and over working in the field of fiber art. All work submitted must be original, completed in the last three years and not previously exhibited in a Fantastic Fibers exhibition. There are no size restrictions.

No more than five entries may be submitted by any artist. A nonrefundable entry fee of $15 per entry for up to five entries is required.

The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce that it is now accepting applications for BKLYN Designs, which will return in 2015 on May 8th, 9th and 10th.

BKLYN Designs 2015 is New York's premier exhibition of contemporary furnishings and home accessories designed or manufactured in Brooklyn. This internationally renowned, juried exhibition features a dynamic collection of designs from the most innovative Brooklyn-based designers and manufacturers.

After over a decade in DUMBO, the event is moving to the Brooklyn Expo Center, the 40,000-square-foot facility in Greenpoint—a neighborhood that has become a hub of creative activity in the borough. Once again, thousands are expected to attend to take in the collection, which will include the latest contemporary furniture, lighting, carpet and flooring, wall coverings, tabletop/outdoor furniture, and accessories.

We will sew two "signature" based books and then attach covers. The first will be an open spine sketch book containing 4 signatures for a total of 48 usable pages. Each signature within the "text block" will be a different paper suitable for drawing. The cover will be paper covered book board with decorative tapes. Using stencils, lace, cardboard, cutouts, paper, doilies, flattened metal odds/ends, rick rack, string, vegetable netting and other interesting flat items found all over the house, we will create a series of similar but individual prints using Speedball water soluble printing ink.

The class begins with a demo and then participants may creatively play and print. Most participants will create 6 to 9 prints (two or three series of three prints each). This method is very free flowing--you will not know exactly what you will have until the paper is pulled from the plate after going through the press.

Solarplate Etching Workshop at Phoenix Rising

Two Session Course: Thursday, February 5th and Saturday, February 7th

Explore the versatile, contemporary printmaking process of solarplate printing. This non-toxic method of plate-making uses solar energy (UV light) and water to develop an image for an etching or photo-etching. No acid is used! Starting with a drawing or photograph, the results can be wonderful, varied and lead to creating a limited edition.

This 2-session workshop is fine for both beginners and experienced printmakers. The first evening session is a demo and learning the process; the second day, creating the plate and printing your image multiple times. You bring the creative spark and an apron or smock; and we provide the materials.

Session One: Thursday, February 5, 2015; 6:30-8:00pm

Session Two: Saturday, February 7, 2015; 10:00am-2:00pm

(half hour break for lunch)

Video Critique Group is a monthly gathering for video, performance, and time-based artists to connect, share artwork, give and receive critical feedback, and participate in discussions.

Collage 2015 features the artwork of six contemporary artists, Louise Captein, N. Penney Denning, Egle’ Gatins, Martin Hugo, Margee Bright-Ragland, and OAL member artist Christine Guillot Ryan, who explore a wide range of approaches to the media of collage and mixed media collage.

Collage came out of the studio and into the exhibition halls early in the 20th century when Cubism fractured the traditional images of painting and sculpture. Often called the poor artist’s medium, it enabled the artist to be spontaneous and flexible, to move elements around quickly before committing to a final composition.

About the Concourse Gallery: The Concourse Gallery is a public reception area of the Municipal Services Center and home to our Visual Arts Series. The City of Upper Arlington has dedicated this space to the arts for over 30 years. Call for Proposals: Rosewood Gallery 2016 Exhibition Season

The City of Kettering, Ohio, and the Kettering Arts Council invite artists working in any media to submit proposals for exhibition in Rosewood Gallery during the 2016 Exhibition Season (January - December).

Proposals must be postmarked by April, 30 2015!

Rosewood Gallery specializes in the exhibition of contemporary art by emerging local, regional and national artists. It is dedicated to the encouragement and creation of new works and to the promotion of the visual arts in the Dayton, Ohio area. Eight solo exhibitions are presented each year in Rosewood Gallery, sponsored by the Kettering Arts Council and the City of Kettering Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts, with support from the Ohio Arts Council.

A selection committee composed of regional art professionals will make recommendations from submissions of work for exhibition. 2016 Exhibition Season jurors are Aaron Cowan, Director, DAAP Galleries; Jeffrey Cortland Jones, Associate Professor, Department of Art and Design, University of Dayton; and Jessica Barry, Owner/President, School of Advertising Art and Member, Kettering Arts Council. Notifications of the jurors' decision will be mailed by the end of May 2015.

All media will be considered for exhibition, including video and installation pieces. Exhibition proposals must include the following:

1. A cover letter describing the proposed exhibition, any special installation requirements, and available dates.

2. A resume, an artist's statement, a 2-3 line summary of artist’s statement, and previous exhibition record.

3. Ten (10) images and a corresponding list stating titles, media, dimensions and dates. The committee will be presented with only 10 images for consideration. If the work you are submitting is for example only, please be specific in your explanation of what you propose to present in the gallery if selected. Digital submissions should be in JPEG format and must be labeled with the artist’s last name and entry number corresponding with the list provided. Example: Lastname1.jpg, Lastname2.jpg

4. A self-addressed, stamped envelope if you would like your submission information returned.

The City of Kettering insures all works while on exhibition (please refer to our policy) and covers printing and distribution costs of an announcement mailer for each exhibit. A transportation and shipping honorarium of $100 is provided to artists. Any cost reimbursement requirements over and above the $100 honorarium should be listed and explained in the proposal. Rosewood Gallery does not provide equipment for multimedia installations. The gallery walls are fabric covered and cannot be altered other than standard hanging fasteners. Various pedestals are available for exhibitions. Educational programs and Artist Talks are encouraged. All inquiries and materials should be mailed to the address below.

Chestnut Street Gateway Mural, Call for Qualifications

Public Art Chattanooga is seeking qualifications from artists or artist teams for the commission and installation of a mural at 2001 Chestnut Street at West 20th Street in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Up to three finalists will be selected to develop concept proposals for this project. Each finalist will be paid a $500 stipend. The project budget for the selected commission is $25,000. The Chestnut Street Gateway Mural will provide a transformative and dynamic visual anchor to this important gateway.

The site is located on the southwest perimeter of Chattanooga's revitalized Southside neighborhood, and is adjacent to Finley Stadium and First Tennessee Pavilion, home to a variety of heavily attended public events including sports, a major fine art festival, and the Chattanooga Market, a weekly community farmer's and craft market. Once a blighted and severely neglected industrial district, the Southside has experienced a rebirth through reinvestment and is being transformed into a thriving and urban neighborhood. Only blocks away, a 3.5-mile extension of the award-winning Tennessee Riverpark is under construction that will connect Chattanooga;s downtown to South Chattanooga and significantly increase pedestrian and bike traffic. Here, old and new neighbors embrace diversity, urban living, and the return of locally-owned businesses.

On January 27 from 3-4pm VSA Ohio will offer a webinar titled "Tools and Techniques for Artists with and without Disabilities: How to Handle the Resistance in the Creative Process". Many creatives experience creative blocks due to the resistance that is part of the creative process. Too often, resistance stops the artist from making movement in their art work or out in their careers. This includes artists with disabilities and without disabilities--no artist is immune to this challenge. However, resistance can be a conduit for change when the artist uses techniques and strategies alongside their art making process. When someone attains a disability or goes through some changes in their lives or artisitically this resistance can be stonger than normal. This where developing a tookbox to handle the many changes that effects one's creativity becomes highly valuable to the artist. This presentation addresses the many ways in which to redirect one's creativity.

"Hearts United" Public Art Project

Hearts United for One Billion Rising, the 2nd annual "Hearts United" Public Art Project. Second Sight Studio will once again be facilitating a public art display that is open to anyone who would like to participate. Hearts United for One Billion Rising is a project in which individuals and collaborative groups create heart-shaped or heart-themed art to be displayed at the Bellows End schoolyard, just across the street from the studio. Everyone is invited to convene at the schoolyard from 11am to 2pm on Saturday, February 14 to hang their artwork on the fences, enjoy the work of others, and then warm up at the studio with coffee and donuts.

This project is part of the global observance of One Billion Rising's "V-Day", a movement to draw attention to the need to end violence against women. Last year, there were over 100 Columbus artist participants from elementary-school age all the way through adults. This year, "Hearts United" is two cities strong, with a concurrent happening at House Tremont, an alternative art space in Cleveland.

Registration for the 8 week class is only $280 per person! It includes 25lbs of clay, glazes, firing, open studio time during the session and a student gallery show and raku firing at the end of session. evening classes meet from 6:30-9:00pm once a week for 8 weeks. There is also a 4 week Raku Class for $150 per person, which is Mondays from 6:30-9:00pm, January 5-26.

Play with Fire! Spend 3 weeks making work to raku and spend the last class firing the raku kiln. Work can be made on or off the potter's wheel and textured for the kiln. The 3rd class will focus on glazing and the final class will focus on the firing process. Raku is an exciting and rewarding way to fire your work. The fire and smoke from the reduction chambers add drama to the process and create stunning surfaces on the work.

"Clintonville Comes to Downtown!" The Rhodes Tower Exhibition!

The Clintonville Arts Guild will host an exhibition of its members work during the month of January, 2015, in the lobby of the James A. Rhodes Office Tower, 30 E. Broad Street, Columbus. Twenty-five artists will present 70 works in a wide variety of media and styles – paintings (oil, acrylic, watercolor), collage, mixed media, photography, fiber, fused glass, jewelry, and ceramics.

The Rhodes Tower exhibition is an opportunity for the Guild to announce itself to a broader audience, and to show how the arts thrive in many of Columbus’ neighborhoods. An artists’ reception is planned for Thursday, January 15th from 6 to 8 PM in the Rhodes Tower lobby.

The Clintonville Arts Guild meets every 4th Monday, from September through May, at 7 PM at the Whetstone Community Center, 3923 N High St. “We have monthly programs that inform and inspire, and opportunities to be part of several group shows each year,” Pusecker notes. “We also issue a challenge for our members every May – ‘given a specific theme, create an artwork in your own style and preferred medium. Past challenge themes have included flamingoes, doors, blue, masks, things fall apart, and an ‘aha’ moment.”

Harrison Park Public Art Opportunity- Calling All Members!

Request for Qualifications/Call for artist proposals

The Columbus Public Art Program, in partnership with the Harrison West Society is going to commission a professional artist to design and install a fifth site-specific public artwork in Harrison Park.

Qualifications are sought from professional visual artists who live or work in the state of Ohio. An Artist Advisory Panel will select three artist finalists to prepare proposals. Artist finalists will each receive a proposal fee of $750 to prepare and present a site specific public art proposal at a community event hosted by the Harrison West Society. The art will be selected through a community voting process. The selected proposal will be forwarded to the Columbus Art Commission for conceptual design and placement approval. The Columbus Recreation and Parks Department will also review the proposal for acceptance into Harrison Park.

The artist will have a $90,000 all-inclusive budget as well as a 10% contingency set aside. All contracts will be held by the City of Columbus and artists receiving payments will be required to register with city Vendor Services.

All materials must be received by 4pm on January 15, 2015.

The Anthony Quinn Foundation is accepting applications for its 2015 Scholarship Program, an annual program that aims to perpetuate the legendary actor/artist's vision for an art-conscious society.

Through the program, the foundation supports high school students' extracurricular study of the visual arts and design, performing arts, media arts, and literary arts. Scholarship amounts range from $1000 to $3000. Scholarships may be used for a recognized pre-college, summer, or after school arts education program, but may not be used for either secondary school or college tuition.

To be eligible, applicants must be young adults in high school who demonstrate exceptional talent, dedication, and a strong commitment to personal artistic growth, and who will benefit from financial support.

The Society for Contemporary Craft

The Arts Council of Indianapolis seeks to establish a new pool of highly qualified artists and artist teams for a number of open calls and commissioning opportunities for outdoor murals (wall-based artwork) over the next several years.

Artists who qualify will be eligible for selection for mural projects with budgets up to $100,000. Budgets are inclusive of design, travel, artists’ fees, materials, labor, rentals, insurance coverage, subcontracts, and all other costs associated with the design and production of mural artwork.

Eligibility:

The Bogliasco Foundation's Study Center provides residential fellowships for qualified persons working on advanced creative or scholarly projects in the arts and humanities. The Study Center is one of the few residential institutions in the world dedicated exclusively to all of the humanistic disciplines: Archaeology, Architecture/Landscape Architecture, Classics, Dance, Film/Video, History, Literature, Music, Philosophy, Theater, and the Visual Arts.

During their month long stay at the Center, Bogliasco Fellows are provided with living quarters, full board, and a separate private studio.

Since the Study Center was founded in 1996, it has hosted more than 750 fellows from 50 countries.

Columbus Arts Festival

Deadline: Saturday February 14, 2015 at 2:59 am.

The 2015 Columbus Arts Festival will feature exciting works of Street Chalk Painting and is seeking artists to participate on June 12, 13 and 14. A sketch of the work planned to present at the Festival, as well as an image of a prior work of chalk painting will be required with the application. The selection will depend on the images of work submitted.
