This artwork is a part of a series about my childhood, trauma, and recovery. Looking closely, you will see representations off innocence and grief buried in the bright colors. This piece began as a collage where I adhered hospital records, old photos, old documents, and children’s drawings, then built upon them with a mixture of mediums to create a superimposed and contrasting composition. “Innocence” is a piece of pure expression through the physicality of art-making and emotional release. The process of standing in front of the easel throwing paint and creating marks out of intuition adds to the elevation of feelings. Having the suggestion of vulgarity next to a young lamb lays out a personal and uncomfortable reality that I am aiming to bring attention to, to resist the tiptoeing around such a sensitive topic. Overall, this work speaks of a yearning nostalgia I have for childhood but a feeling pain as well.
