A month-long initiative presented by Columbus's own, Wild Goose Creative, #wildartcolumbus brings together the best of social media interaction and the growing appreciation for "community-driven arts." Rather than seeing the omnipotent internet in our everyday lives as a means to escape person-to-person encounters, the philosophy behind #wildartcolumbus is that they can be symbiotic and even meaningful.

Each day during September, viewers of Wild Goose Creative's social media accounts will be invited to linger on and converse about art from a range of mediums, and connect with the artist as well!

Keep your eyes peeled for Ohio Art League member-artist-volunteer, Cyrus Fire! With a name like that, you know he's got to be good.

Conversations about the work of 29 artists will be brought together in order to procure an exhibition with a gallery reception at the end of September-the 30, to be exact- in the WGC community art space.  Make sure you tag #wildartcolumbus to take part in the dialogue and see what your local Columbus grown artists are up to.

In case you haven’t heard of Women Painting Women, it's a major movement now, started as a blog to spotlight women artists a few years ago by innovator artists, Alia El-Bermani, Diane Feisel and Sadie Valeri. Over the past five years, this revolution has grown into multiple shows each September at some of the finest figurative art galleries across the country. And this year…after trying for a few years to get in, one of “Chicks with Balls” creator Judy Takacs paintings will be included! Yay!

The show opens tomorrow, September 5th at the Principle Gallery in Charleston, South Carolina from 6- 8 pm. As we know this is quite the voyage to make in 24-hour’s notice, so you can still check out Takacs’s solo exhibition in Oberlin, Ohio on the same night! And she will be there!

The Age of Adventure: Judy Takács Paints the Retired and Inspired includes selections of her paintings of seniors from the Solon Senior Center, the Nuns of Notre Dame and others. If you’re in the area over the weekend, check out the Gallery Talk with Judy at 4:30 pm tomorrow night (9/5). The Age of Adventure will be on display through October 5 at the Kendal Gallery at Oberlin.

For centuries, artists have used their mediums as an expression of societal issues and community outreach. From musical legend Bob Dylan to Picasso’s Guernica, their predecessors and those greats to follow, artists encompass peace in hopes of changing the world. Peace is possible, and you can help!

The Peace Project’s 5th annual Call-for-Artists is now open and asking artists worldwide to show the world where Peace starts. Artists are asked to delve deeper into the birth of peace and its progression. Does it arise from the simple beauty provided by nature? A child’s innocence? Equality? Community? Love?

In four short years, The Peace Project, supported by artists and others, has:

    • Educated dozens of children in Sierra Leone, Africa.
    • Distributed 10,000 pairs of crutches to amputees, war victims, polio survivors and mothers and children in Sierra Leone on World Peace Day, 2011.
    • Designed a Peace Museum in Sierra Leone in conjunction with the UN.
    • Created and produced Peace Tips, specially designed crutch tips that last one year, extend the life of crutches and greatly improve mobility for users.
    • And currently, they’re building 40 houses and a community center in the Philippines for victims of Typhoon Haiyan.

Deadline for submission is 4 pm September 8, 2014, so submit today!

There's still time to check out OAL artist Maria diFranco's 'Art as Contemporary Folklore' at the Acock Gallery in CCAD's Canzani Center! Not much, but there's still time!

Stop by the Acock Gallery on Saturday, August 30 from 6- 8 pm and join us for light refreshments at the Closing Reception of this thought-provoking, contemporary experience that explores the interrelationships between art historical precedents and the present. Through etchings, drawings, paintings and carvings, diFranco demands a response of the viewer through the use of symbols and metaphors.

“The idea of showing food in a manner that’s reserved to people gives a unique take on human personality. This show is for anyone who has ever enjoyed playing with their food and now they don't have to imagine what it would look like. To see how the inanimate would live if they could.”

View this exhibition August 28–September 13 during the MadLab theatre production, “The Playdaters."

To see the hours and dates for the show and gallery schedule, find out more about the theatre or gallery, or simply to determine MadLab's location in Downtown Columbus, click here to visit the MadLab website

As the second exhibition presented through the correlation of MadLab Theatre and Gallery and the Ohio Art League, 'Play with your Food' is not to be missed! Check out the Opening Reception August 30th from 5- 7 pm in the MadLab Gallery.

“Perception is reality, and I am fascinated how people gather fragments of what they decide is true and important-- memory, stories, cultural influences, experiences, ideas and beliefs-- and shape them into personal world views. I take fragments of the external world and weave them with invention and paint to create new morphing realities,” states OAL member Christine Guillot Ryan of her upcoming exhibition.

'Converging Boundaries' will be exhibited in the Cultural Arts Center Main Hall Gallery from September 5 through October 4, 2014.

Don't miss the Opening Reception of 'Converging Boundaries' from 5:30- 8:30 pm on September 5th.

Guillot Ryan’s latest mixed media works explore the nature of our boundaries, the relationship between the intangible and the material world. Weaving fragments of representational imagery with paint, Christine creates new worlds that are vivid and richly layered, inviting imagination and provoking conceptual discovery.

Christine exhibits locally and nationally, is a member of the Ohio Art League and CAW (Creative Arts of Women), Art and Artists of 614, mentors students at Fort Hayes, and teaches workshops at the Peggy R. McConnell Arts Center of Worthington and at the Cultural Arts Center. For more of her work and a schedule of upcoming exhibits, click on the link of her name at the top of the post to be directed to her website.
