As you know, our One Night fundraising event of the year is approaching! October 10 will be here before we all know it, and to get in the spirit of tributing our fine members and their handwork, we at OAL would like to showcase the works by members and esteemed artists Brian Riegel and Barbara Vogel this afternoon.

Vogel received a B.F.A. And M.F.A. from the Ohio State University and was part of OAL's 100th anniversary exhibit at the Riffe Gallery and the recipient of an Ohio Arts Council individual Excellence Award! She is represented by Sherrie Gallery, is a member of CAW, and a trustee at the Ohio Designer Craftsman Museum. You may remember her impression and honorary award at our Ohio Made festival on Sept. 27. One of her One Night works, Flattop, is featured above left.

Recently, Brian Riegel had 18 works on display at Port Columbus Airport, won “best in show” at OAL’s Ohio Made (piece on display at Ohio History Center until Oct. 20th), and was featured in Sept. 2014 issue Stock and Barrel magazine. This winter, Riegel’s body of work will be on display at Cleveland Hopkins Airport. The artist states that his work often "evokes nostalgia as one recognizes familiar items from the past, and the composition forces viewers to see the familiar pieces as something mysterious, new and unfamiliar." Riegel's "favorite challenge is to take peoples’ once beloved, ... outmoded objects and create something valuable that requires them to see the objects with a new perspective." His evaluation of his work is evident in the piece Celtic Chain Drive displayed above right.

Both works will be available for purchase at the Live Auction, October 10 (next Friday!) at Strongwater Spirits and Gallery during our One Night event! Don't forget to get your submissions in by MONDAY Oct. 6 at 11:59 PM!

We know how great you members are, so in spirit of Tribute, we want to show you how much! Each day until October 10, we will be showcasing a few of the artists who have donated work(s) to the One Night Live Auction!

Get your submissions in, you guys! The deadline for submission is October 6!!! That's 5 days away! It's a great opportunity to help out the OAL as well as promote yourself to art collectors and head-haunchos throughout the community. Plus, we love to see what you're working with!

Today, we're highlighting member-artists Andy Hudson and Erica Gilbert!

One of the founding members of Glass Axis and 20-year-veteran of the Ohio Art League, Andy Hudson is a retired OSU Medical Educator, an artist, art collector and glassblower. As we’re sure you’ve seen his work around (and out of) town, now is your chance to own one of his one-of-a-kind fire drawings like Saroon featured above left!

OAL member-artist and COSI‘s own Erica Gilbert paints mostly landscapes of places she has traveled and is inspired by light and color in nature. She has an M.Ed. in Early Childhood Education and a studio art minor. Let her soft, nature-inspired works breathe life into your home and bid on her works at One Night! Check out her oil painting Venice as seen to the right above!

We knowhow much you have all wanted to spend some time together in a comfortable, yet ever-so- architecturally brilliant space, so look no further!

Join us at Franklinton's Strongwater Food and Spirits for the OAL's Member's Social on Weds. September 17 at 5:30 pm!

As you may have noticed from our One Night '14 theme, Tribute, we've been obsessing about the great things our members have been doing for over 100 years! Digging through archives, researching past artistic movements throughout our history, and just being reminded how without our members and on-going support, none of OAL would be possible; let alone, this awesome!

So, come have a drink with your OAL administrators and Board members, as well as potential *fingers crossed* members and current members, so we, as an organization, can discuss the direction of the Ohio Art League in terms of marketing, programming, opportunities, and all the in-between. We want your feedback!

If you're not yet a member, that's okay! Find out more about joining  and stay up-to-date by checking our blogs and Facebook page!

Above: Patricia Reis, Regional Emerging Artist-in-Residence/Studio 215A
    July-December 2014

    Two Deadlines: {ONLINE} or {RECEIVE}

    October 6, 2014 (January – July 2015 Residency)

    March 30, 2015 (July 2015 – January 2016 Residency)

    Regional Emerging Artist-in-Residence

    Artspace

    Raleigh, NC

    2015/2016 Residency

Established in January 2000, the Regional Emerging Artist Residency provides emerging visual artists with time and space to explore their work in a supportive, thriving, artistic environment at Artspace. Two artists in their early professional careers are chosen from a regional pool of applicants every six months.

**The residency includes a private, rent-free studio with 24-hour access. Artspace does NOT provide transportation or living quarters.

Each month residents are presented to the Triangle community during Artspace’s opening receptions and gallery walks. A fully supported exhibition of the resident’s work will be presented in the Artspace lobby after the residency.

The primary focus of the program is to provide an artist with time for independent work, but some participation in Artspace programs is expected. During the residency, artists must contribute to Artspace’s educational programs and tours by working in their studios during business hours, especially during scheduled tours. Resident artists will also be expected to give a presentation, talk, and/or demonstration to the public during their exhibition or 6-month residency.

    ELIGIBILITY

    1. Artspace’s Emerging Artist Residencies are available to promising artists in their formative years committed to advancing their own work and professional careers.

    2. Artists must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents over 18 years of age and must currently reside in the Southeast (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia).

    3. Artists working in most mediums will be considered, including experimental media; however, artists working with toxic materials, hazardous machinery, etc. will not be considered due to limitations within the building.

    4. Artists must not be enrolled in an institutional program of study, including instructional museum programs, during the residency period. (Applicants may be in school during application process.)

    5. Artists must be ready to enjoy working in an open studio setting where the public is able to interact with the artist during public hours. Artists must work in the studio a minimum of 15 hours per week during public hours.
