SCULPTUREX 2014: THE SOCIAL POLITICAL OBJECT will examine social and cultural activism carried out through the mechanisms of art and culture.

Hosted by Columbus College of Art & Design on Saturday, Oct. 11, The Social Political Object will present artwork and research that explore designation, the object, and the system an object is held within. Artists, academics, community members, and cultural practitioners will come together for discussions intended to illuminate both historical work and current activity. Keynote speaker Sharon Hayes is an internationally renowned artist whose work looks at gender by demonstrating how historical gender affiliations have embedded themselves in our collective memory and are played out in current political situations. Her work has been shown in museums, galleries, and performance spaces around the world, including the New Museum, the Tate Modern in London, Museum Moderner Kunst in Vienna, and the Deutsche Guggenheim in Berlin.

This is your opportunity to give a brief presentation (similar to an elevator pitch) of your work to a large audience of practicing artists, art educators, art historians, and others in the region. The panel will now be 60 minutes long and we are looking for 12 quality BFA/MFA students in the region to proficiently present a few images of recent work and briefly talk (2 minutes & 30 seconds maximum) about ideas, themes, and/or process.

If you are interested in presenting your work and/or being a student moderator at the SculptureX symposium PLEASE email

"The creatures in [Ashley] Pierce's work seem to be acting in their own little dramas. They are whimsical at first glance but it soon becomes clear that they are struggling with more complex issues. Surprisingly, because it's not clear if they are male or female or even if they are human. Ashley regards most of her characters as self-portraits."

Ohio Art League member-artist Ashley D. Pierce (Ashley Pauley) is a self-taught mixed media artist born and residing in Columbus, Ohio. The subject matter of her work is drawn from her personal experiences, emotions and people in her life. Sometimes her work seems light and comical, but often it's deceiving dealing with deeper more complex issues. Pattern and texture play an important role in her work as she states that it allows her time to build relationships and work out conflicts with her subject matter. The unique style of her work allows the viewer to create their own story and dialog with the piece.

In the artist's own words: "I start with an idea and create a very loose sketch on wood. It’s not until I start inking the drawing in until I know if it will work out or not."

Ashley's show will be on display at the Lindsay Gallery on North High Street now through September 27 (the day of Ohio Made), with an Opening Reception Friday, September 5 from 6- 9 pm.

For those of you that have watched and fallen in love with the Emmy-winning animated series Bob's Burgers, you know it's more art form than cartoon. Thus, the creator of the show, Loren Bouchard, has decided to launch a "not-a-knockoff" comic book of the show to illustrate a "dream state" in which the storytelling is heightened to a peak with a layout resembling the fantasy sequences in the show.

"Local gallery and toy shop Rivet will be carrying the new comic book series, and if that’s not exciting enough- the gallery will have an exclusive variant first issue that features Rivet on the cover next to Bob’s Burgers hamburger restaurant," says Columbus Underground. "Laura Kuenzli, owner of Rivet and huge fan of Tina Belcher (the eldest daughter in the Belcher family), is thrilled to offer the new comic with such special significance."

If you haven't stopped into the gallery slash toy shop, you're totally missing out. From innovative, contemporary, fun local art spread across the walls, to provocative, sophisticated photography, to, Game of Thrones and Adventuretime paraphernalia, you can basically decorate your entire trendy, studio apartment in one place.

Kuenzli learned of Bob’s Burgers about two years ago and since then has enjoyed escaping into the world of the Belchers.

“I enjoy that every character has memorable quotes and the story revolves around an average family trying to get by every day in their own quirky way,” says the gallery owner. “It is a 30 minute interval of happiness that finds escape of daily stress. And of course, I feel a connection with Tina. I believe she is my spirit animal.”

Lolz all you want, but Rivet will sell the comics as long as Kuenzli loves the show! Read the entire article via the Columbus Underground website!
