We at Ohio Art League would like to congratulate member artists Lynda McClanahan, Sarah Hahn, Ellice Park, as well as Sherry Farris for their upcoming exhibition Liberation from Bondage.

Liberation from Bondage will be on display at the Methodist Theological School in Ohio (MTSO) gallery from October 29 to November 13. The gallery is open to the public from 10 am - 6 pm Mondays through Saturdays and 2 - 6pm on Sundays. 

Curated by Park, Liberation from Bondage is an diverse display of works inspired by the journeys we take to reclaim our basic human freedoms. These freedoms span emotional and cognitive processes, various heritages, and theological and sociological cultural dynamics. 

MTSO will also host a panel discussion with the artists on October 29 at 2 pm in the Alford Centrum.

Thumb Box Submission are OPEN!! 

Thumb Box is our annual small works exhibition that has continued annually since 1916 during the month of December and exhibits works 6 x 6 x 6" or smaller by our talented members.

Members are encouraged to submit up to three 2-D or 3-D works for inclusion in the show! This years exhibition will be hosted at R.A.W. Gallery owed by member George Leach. Keep an eye out on the website for updates!

Deadline for submission is November 29th @ Noon

Water Tower Brooklyn, Encaustic on Panel, 16x16

Somewhere in between grit and grime Kellie McDermott reveals the grotesque beauty of abandoned urban landscapes. Through her use of encaustics and other wet media McDermott paints scenes of these spaces that appear frozen in time. Light and shadow become key compositional elements that aid in the contrast of structure and chaos. The surface quality of encaustic allows McDermott to create a textural, almost sculpture like, quality in the paintings that reflects the physical structures of the landscapes and architecture she is depicting.

Kellie's works are currently on display at the Griffin Gallery, 77 Mill Street, Gahannah, Ohio.

Clayspace is offering a four week Raku class on Mondays from 6:30 to 9 pm from Oct. 20 through Nov. 10!

Whether you're looking for a new hobby or would like to expand your horizons in the artistic world, join OAL member and Clayspace instructor/ resident artist Todd Hickerson through the 4-week journey to the raku kiln!

Raku is an exciting and rewarding way to fire your work, and the fire and smoke from the reduction chambers add drama to the process and create stunning surfaces on the work! It's a skill that will last you a lifetime, and who knows, it could be your calling. At only $150 a person, why miss the opportunity to find out?

Spend 3 weeks making work to raku, and spend the last class firing the raku kiln. Work can be made on or off the potter's wheel and textured for the kiln. The 3rd class will focus on glazing and the final class will focus on the firing process.

If the idea of raku firing is a bit too intimidating, that's okay! Clayspace is also offering Daytime Potter's Wheel on Wednesdays from 11:30- 2 pm! This eight-week course (Oct. 20- Dec. 12) covers basic wheel throwing techniques and those for the more advanced. Students work at their own pace with one-on-one support. This workshop is $280/ person, and trust me, you'll never be more zen.

ROY G BIV Gallery for Emerging Artists of Columbus, OH is accepting submissions for ImageOHIO 15, a statewide, juried exhibition of the best photographic, video and new media art in Ohio. 

Juror Benjamin Montague, Assistant Professor in Photography at Wright State University, will select the exhibiting artists. Montague has works on display in the collections of the Columbus Museum of Art and the New Mexico Museum of Art in Santa Fe.

Deadline for submission is October 30 by midnight! It's easy!

Entries are limited to artists living in or who are from Ohio. The selected artists’ work will be exhibited from January 20 – February 20, 2015, at the Fort Hayes Shot Tower Gallery.

The Opening Reception for ImageOHIO 15 is January 23 from 7- 9 pm in the Shot Tower Gallery, and an Artists Panel Discussion will be held February 20 from 1 -2 pm.

Rapid Response Curating is a newly developed strategy in collecting and curating objects that has been adopted by the V&A Museum to reflect “the changing way fast-moving global events influence society.”

“The rapid response collecting strategy is a new strand to the V&A museum’s collections policy, which can respond very quickly to events relevant to design and technology.”

V&A has acquired Katy Perry Lashes, the first 3D-printed gun, and a pair of jeans purchased from Primark that were made near the Plaza factory in Dhaka, Bangladesh, which collapsed earlier this year.

In this workshop, we will be examining this new strategy, talking about the history and future of curating, and applying our knowledge of the strategy to create our own work/pieces. An exhibition of the work will be on display the following day and evening.

The 2014 Lego Design Challenge, presented by the Center for Creativity at the Columbus Museum of Art, is a design competition that promotes the creative and original use of LEGO bricks!

Anyone is eligible to participate in the 2014 LEGO DESIGN CHALLENGE, but all finalists must be able to transport their designs to and from CMA on the designated dates. And by anyone, they mean anyone! All ages, as well as groups, are able to submit!

Those wishing to submit their unique, LEGO-based artwork, are asked to respond to the following challenge:

In The LEGO Movie, the characters explore a wild variety of imaginary worlds made of LEGO bricks. Help us imagine a new Columbus! What building, structure, or mode of transportation does a new Columbus need? Be a Master Builder and make something with LEGO bricks for our new Columbus.

Guidelines, you gotta have ‘em:

• The design must be built on a LEGO baseplate measuring 10”x10”
  
• The design may not exceed 10” W x 10” L x 24” H
  

Judging will be based on:

• Creative application of LEGO bricks
  
• Imaginative design and concept
  
• Difficulty of execution

The Opening Reception for Blue Molly takes place this Friday, Oct. 17 from 5 to 7 in the evening at MadLab Gallery in Downtown Columbus. 


"My work is more about the materials. My motivations for these works deals with labor and ingenuity. I want these pieces to talk about the livelihood for blue-collar men and women by using their trades to describe their personality and who they are beyond face value. I engineer these sculptures and paintings to become fun, intriguing, or unique to describe more of a complex situation in a simplistic understanding of materials and gravity." -AB
